Silver Jackets Florida Coastal Resilience Workshops

Regional Workshops

The Florida Coastal Resilience Workshop for planners and engineers is a Florida Silver Jackets initiative to increase community resilience to coastal storms and sea level rise and facilitate compliance with state laws, statutes, and requirements by providing hands-on training with tools developed by state and federal agencies to assess, communicate, and address risk to Florida communities. The dates for the two 3-day regional workshops are shown below. The workshops are identical with variations in applied exercises geared toward each respective coast.

Florida Gulf Coast: April 19-21, 2022                        Florida Atlantic Coast: May 24-26, 2022

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
  • Center training on state laws and requirements associated with coastal resilience to facilitate compliance;
  • Provide background and basic training on publicly accessible tools and resources that local and regional planners and engineers can use within the context of state statutes to assess, communicate, and address risk; and
  • Provide hands-on training with tools developed by state and federal agencies.
SHORT AGENDA (To access the full agenda, click here.)
  • Day 1: Assess/Communicate: Overview of foundational Florida laws and statutes related to coastal resilience.
  • Day 2: Assess/Communicate: Overview of tools applicable to assess coastal storm risks and vulnerabilities to Florida communities to comply with Florida laws and statutes.
  • Day 3: Communicate/Address: Overview of tools and data applicable to communicate and address coastal storm risks and vulnerabilities to Florida communities.

Technical Workshop

The Florida Coastal Resilience Workshop Part 2 provides a more detailed module for engineers on the Coastal Hazards System (CHS) and NOAA Adapting Storm Water Management for Coastal Hazards tool to assess, communicate, and address risk to Florida communities posed by coastal storms and sea level rise.

Technical Workshop: June 7, 2022, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm EDT

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
  • Teach and demonstrate how local city and county engineers can easily access the CHS high-fidelity numerical modeling (coupled hydrodynamic and waves) when designing and planning flood risk mitigation projects and preparing and responding to coastal storms; and
  • Teach and demonstrate NOAA’s Adapting Storm Water Management for Coastal Hazards to analyze stormwater systems for scenario development based on user inputs.
